Environment/ Setting:
Because my character is Venetian, the backdrop of the Venice canals seemed like the perfect place to locate my game. It's an environment that would work nicely for level progression as well, slowly moving up from the canals, to the streets/bridges and finally to the rooftops in a parkour-esq chasing style of game. Climbing and jumping would probably be my main mechanics. Night time would be best, as this is when my Vigilante comes out to play and the canals look more visually interesting at night with the glow of the lamplights reflecting on the water.
Stylisation:
By setting it at twilight/nighttime it could be fun to play around with silhouettes. I know I plan to have my character (all dressed in black) be a silhouette for most of the game, running away and hiding amongst the rabbit warren of twisting side streets and rooftops. I think the game could look quite aesthetically pleasing if many of the buildings were in silhouette as well, especially the bridges that cross over the canals, with a light-ish evening sky and lampposts + lit windows guiding the way for the player. (Possibly lending to some tricky spots in the game where the player might accidentally mistake the water for a footpath in the dim light mwa ha ha).
