2D Game Design Planning - START PAGES

In my researching of platformer games, I've noticed that each and every game has some form of Start Page/ Game Set Up series of pages that explain the game mechanics, plot and backstory to the player. I decided this set up would work nicely for my game as well.

--- Examples from the Nitrome Games platformer, 'Twinshot 2' ---

START PAGE ^^^

CONTROLS / MECHANICS PAGE^^^

I want my Start Page to be simply bold and striking, immediately showing the silhouette style of the game which I plan to use consistently throughout. I will use the backdrop of the Venetian cityscape in silhouette and possibly have a little animation of Jack Nimble running across the rooftops in silhouette (but only if I have time haha). There will be an old fashioned looking banner along the bottom of the screen that players will need to click with their mouse to start the game.

Once clicking 'start' I plan for the game to take the player to another page that outlines the game controls. This way, there won't be any confusion/ time wasted for the player when they begin playing the game because they will already know all of the different player mechanics available to them. I will also outline the health and point scoring systems of the game in this page.

Lastly I plan to have a task outline/ goal window or page before each level throughout my game. This technique (I hope) will build excitement for the player and give them more incentive to finish the levels to find out more backstory behind their character, Jack Nimble, and teach them more about my games Value. E.g. "Go and steal this famous painting so that you can sell it and feed the poor in your neighbourhood. The leftover money can be spent on helping the kind mask maker who often looked after you when you were younger"
