Battleships Rule Change

Another class task to teach us about the fundamentals of game design, this time with an emphasis on rules and how much they can influence a game.

Here's an in depth description of Battleships rules ^^^

Basically the goal of the game is to sink all of your opponents ships.

By changing a rule, you can change the entire experience of a game for the player, so it's important to make sure you're aware of how your rules will affect how the game is played and experienced by your target audience.

For instance, if I removed the rule in Battleships of players not being allowed to look at each others grids and where they have placed their battleships, then the game would be ruined. As the reason why the game is exciting and challenging, is because the players DO NOT know where their opponents ships are and have to blindly GUESS and use various strategies to figure it out.

If I replaced the rule of not being allowed to look at your opponents grid, with a rule saying you ARE allowed to look at your opponents grid, and that you are also allowed to physically HIDE your grid from your opponent, then the traditionally calm and quiet game would quickly turn into a game similar to that of 'tag your it' where players would be chasing each other around the room attempting to steal a glance at each others battleship grids. This would completely change the dynamics of the game and the players experience.

I'd never stopped to realise how important rules are to a game before. This task helped me to fully understand the extent at which rules influence a game and how important they are to a games success and enjoyment to play.
