Lotte Reiniger - Stylistic Reference

Lotte Reiniger was a pioneer in silhouette animation, and actually created the first feature length animated film BEFORE Walt Disney's Snow White. (Her film was called 'The Adventures of Prince Achmed' and was released in 1926).

I really love the style of silhouette shown through Reiniger's films. It's simple, yet also incredibly detailed, and looks stunning with a great amount of impact happening on screen.

I have decided I will use similar stylistic techniques for my own games background environments and silhouette style in my game. My reasoning being:

1) Due to time constrains, digitally hand drawing all the details on my character, Jack Nimble, as well as Venetian architecture which is frankly, mind bogglingly complex- will be damn near impossible with the due date being in less than a weeks time.

2) Much like the game 'Limbo' I think the silhouettes and shadows give a distinct atmosphere that is haunting and beautiful. And it's a feeling that I associated with Venice when I visited on my art trip last year, so by using this style I feel like I will be capturing the 'essence' of venice into my game and therefore will make my game interesting and memorabe to the player.
